The head of the New Mexico Office of the Natural Resources Trustee says her agency has received a $10 million payment from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of a Gold King Mine spill lawsuit settlement, a move she hopes soon will lead to the distribution of funds to grant recipients. Maggie Hart Stebbins, the natural resources trustee, said her office is in the process of completing a draft memoranda of understanding with the entities that are responsible for completing 10 projects designed to help northwest New Mexico recover from the effects of the 2015 spill, in which millions of gallons of toxic waste accidentally were discharged into the Animas and San Juan rivers.
